My English Classes & Cultural Consulting
Don't just study English–live it.
We learn languages to communicate, so why do so many people leave an academy not knowing how to give presentations, send emails, tell jokes, and use their English appropriately? It's because many teachers don't have the intercultural, cultural psychology and business background necessary to prepare students beyond passing an exam.
Even though I use CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) together with Cambridge textbooks as a guide to gauging a student's level, I constantly update material to show how the English language changes in various cultures. I've helped nearly a hundred students pass B2, C1 and C2 exams, but if your only reason to study a language is to get a certificate, I'm not the teacher for you.
Some people, primarily adults from a theory-first culture, prefer learning the rules of a language before feeling confident enough to speak. Others are fortunate enough to pick up on grammar and structure through listening and talking. A great salesperson will convince you a particular method is best, whereas a great teacher will use a bag of pedagogical tools to find what works for you.
Where did this bag of tools come from? I graduated from the University of British Columbia, majoring in English language & literature and minoring in psychology. I also have a 120+ hour TEFL/TESOL certification from the Canadian School of Linguistics and completed the TESOL Advanced Program for Teaching English Online. However, most of these tools come from experience.
Over the past several years, I've worked as a teacher for Chinese, Spanish, and Canadian academies, where I taught students, both adults and children, from over thirty different countries. I've also managed teams in over 70 experiential marketing campaigns for internationally recognized brands, such as Air Miles, Dyson, and Jeep.
With my intercultural experiences, podcast about culture, and cultural competence research, I ensure your English level reaches the level you need to communicate proficiently, no matter the cultural environment.
Here are some of the topics I'm most passionate about:
Intercultural competence
Essay writing
Idioms and slang
Rhetoric
Cultural psychology
Current events
Creative writing
Politeness and formalities
Evidence-based study techniques
