If you want to know the power of Substack’s network effect, leave. That’s what I did, and new subscribers still roll in thanks to the recommendations feature. This post is for all of you new subscribers who don’t know I’m on Ghost.
I rarely post Notes, comments, or do anything that keeps me online more than my desert-dry eyes and melting screen brain can handle. Yet, thanks to the real relationships I formed on Substack before semi-leaving, my Substack keeps growing while my Ghost website (which I’m actively promoting) doesn’t.
So, why did I leave Substack? That’s all in here.
Will I come back? I don’t know yet. It’s the same conundrum I have with Google and Meta. As much as I don’t want to support companies that are backed by Trump-loving technofeudal VC firms, trap you in their systems, and algorithmically polarize people, I’m still a product in their world.
Would we be better off if we all used decentralized, carbon-neutral, non-profit platforms like Ghost? Probably, but the biggest names advocating for change and criticizing Big Tech use Substack, Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, and whatever works best for their bottom line. We’re all playing with the cards we’ve been dealt.
