Let’s get this discussion going.

I’m mentally leafing through my memories of friends from around the world and it makes me feel happy. Sorry, Nolan, but there is nothing scientific about it for me, although I respect those who try to understand these things. All I can think of is warm smiles, shared meals, hugs, laughter, shared experiences both good and sometimes difficult, across colors, nationalities, faiths, and ethnicities. The images and memories in my mind right now make me feel happy, beloved, and so very, very grateful for my wonderful, weird, human family.

There are feelings, experiences, and energy that go beyond borders that research can't explain. They are mystical and spiritual, and I am not trying to take away from that with this article and series. However, there are differences in how we approach friendships and relationships, which I think are important to understand. It can (not always) offer clarity as to why a friend behaved in a way one didn't expect.

Super interesting article. And I really liked your ending “the truth is elusive” — it’s wonderful when people acknowledge this and don’t pretend to know.

Thanks

Fascinating topic! The same type of topic could also be explored in intimate relationships.

I learned so much after reading a book about bilingual American/French families written by an American author who is a sociologist (or anthropologist? Can't remember exactly) & married to a French man (like me). The behavior of a French husband towards his wife in French society is very different from that of an American husband.

Although that definitely did not explain everything (there were other, major, issues to address, including codependency, domestic violence & alcoholism), it opened my eyes to a perspective that I had never thought about.

I’d love to read it! Any chance you can dig up the title?

I think it's this one, I recognize the cover. It was extremely useful to me in bringing up our 3 children bilingual French English while living in rural France with only all-french speaking schools available. Our 3 young adult children are completely bilingual with no accent in either language. https://books.google.fr/books/about/The_Bilingual_Family.html?id=RIEWokOcj6kC&redir_esc=y

What I remember about spousal dynamics could be from a different book by the same author... At least now you have her name so you can look her up
