On Substack, “Top posts” don’t mean the pieces people liked or engaged with the most. The algorithm chooses the most successful paid articles, giving readers the sensation they need to pay for the creme de la creme.
Although I’m down for an algorithm that helps me write professionally, I’m also aware that nobody has time to sort through an entire archive, so I did that for you. Apparently, people pay for efficiency and convenience.
Free subscribers will have until November 1st, 2024, to read these articles. After that, they will go behind a paywall. Yes, this is one of those obvious strategies from writers who focus on sales techniques rather than improving their craft, but… I don’t have an excuse. The truth is, paid subscriptions would give me the time to research and write more of my best work.
Here are the most liked and shared posts of 2023. Bear in mind that this level of engagement was when I had under 200 subscribers, so I hope it gives those new to Substack ideas on how to make this work. Once you do, let me know.
If you enjoyed these articles, please share them with friends or on Notes.
Born Without Borders is a reader-supported guide to the craft of nonconformity, cultural psychology, travel writing and how to salir de las fronteras que impone tu mente. Both free and paid subscriptions are available. If you want to support my work and help me upgrade to more than one cabin bag, the best way is to take out a paid subscription.
